The Virtual Model UN Institute Experience

The Virtual Model United Nations Institute is a year-round educational experience for highly-motivated high school and middle school students ages 11-18 who want to learn about the world, build confidence in their public speaking skills, make new friends, and start leading their community. The Virtual Model United Nations Institute integrates three engaging experiences into one:

Virtual MUN Institute Programs

Students will be in Courses, Conferences, and Communities that reflect their grade level so that they can make friends who they will hopefully be able to see on the Model UN circuit in-person one day! Students are also highly encouraged to enroll with their friends as it's more fun doing Model UN together!

Virtual Model UN Institute Courses

VMUNI Courses

The Virtual Model United Nations Institute Courses are designed to be fun and engaging for students who are busy with school but want to learn and grow through Model UN. Students build their confidence and their public speaking, debating, and leadership skills on a weekly basis through lessons, activities, mini-debates, and feedback from our MUN Mentors.

Courses are semester-long (eight weeks) and take place after-school once a week for 90 minutes each session. Students should plan for about 30 minutes per week to prepare, such as reading the news or topic background guide, or preparing a speech. The recommended time commitment is two hours per week

Courses begin the week of October 19-22 and will finish by the week of December 14-17 for winter break. There will also be a Thanksgiving week break the week of November 23-26. Students will earn a Certificate of Completion at the end of the semester.

There are two Course options available in the Fall semester. Students can take one or both courses. The skills and topics are different for both courses!

Virtual Model UN Conferences (VMUNC)

VMUNI Conferences

The Virtual Model United Nations Institute Conferences are designed to challenge Model UN students to meet and collaborate with other top students on a monthly basis to solve world issues. Students will be assigned to represent different countries and will make speeches, debate, negotiate, and present solutions to be voted upon by their peers.

Conferences take place once a month for six hours on a Saturday (with a 30-minute meal break included). Students are encouraged to participate once a month. Each Saturday has two six-hour time sessions available to accommodate for different time zones.

Students will earn a Certificate of Completion for every conference they attend, and students who demonstrate strong performance as Model UN delegates and leaders will be eligible to receive Delegate Awards: Honorable Mention, Outstanding Delegate, and Best Delegate.

Virtual Model UN Institute Community

VMUNI Community

The Virtual Model United Nations Institute Community is like having a private MUN club. Students get to take on student leadership roles, attend fun events and activities together, and make new friends.

Staff and student leaders will organize different events throughout the month. These include a mix of fun activities such as Trivia Night and Game Night, and learning activities such as Office Hours and Public Speaking Labs. Students are invited to attend these exclusive events and can organize or attend the ones they are interested in.

Students can step into leadership roles within the MUN Institute Community for the semester. Student leaders will be guided by our MUN Mentors. Students are challenged to excel in one role during the Fall semester before taking on a new role or moving up the ranks in the Spring semester. Taking on a student leadership role would require 2 hours per week. The roles available for the Fall semester include:

  • Peer Mentor or Middle School Mentor: mentoring other students to help them build their skills and prepare for MUN conferences.
  • Conference Co-Chair: serving as chairs of the Conferences alongside Best Delegate’s staff. Co-Chairs will receive training in how to facilitate an online MUN simulation.
  • Conference Crisis Staffer: serving as crisis staff of the crisis simulations alongside Best Delegate’s staff. Crisis staffers will be trained to develop crisis updates, respond to crisis notes, and role-play as guest speakers.
  • Social Event Chair: help create and manage the monthly events calendar and help make all Community members feel welcome!
  • Press Corps Officer: capture the Virtual MUN Institute in action through articles, videos, photos, and social media posts to creatively show how MUN is FUN!
